Huletts EquiSweet is a sweetener made with sucralose, a low kilojoule sweetener that offers a similar taste to aspartame which is found in many other sweeteners.
So what is the difference? Why choose sucralose over aspartame or even our Trovato sweetener that contains sodium saccharin, sodium cyclamate and acesulfame-K sweeteners?
The main reason is that there have been concerns raised about the side effects of aspartame. But aspartame is made of naturally occuring amino acids – aspartic acid (produced by your body) and phenylalanine (sourced from food).
One of the worries with aspartame based sweetener is that it is metabolised into methanol by the body and then further into formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. All good and well, but the amount needed to create dangerous levels is enormous and unlikely to be consumed by sane individuals.
All that said, the sweetener has the full approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and World Health Organization. So it is regarded as a safe alternative to sugar (which of course has its own health impacts)
Sweeteners have come a long way from the days of sodium cyclamate which really was a problem compound and was banned across the globe.
