Who said that a home coffee machine or an office coffee vending machine is a luxury? Not the researchers that have added to the cancer literature by finding that four cups a day can reduce the incidence of womb cancer by 25%; nor those who found that the incidence of diabetes and prostate and liver cancer can be reduced by the consumption of coffee; nor those who note that coffee has a higher level of antioxidants than most vegetables and fruits.

In fact, there are a lot of scientific studies that conclude coffee is beneficial to your health.

So is a coffee machine a luxury you cannot afford? It never ceases to amaze us just how unscrupulous some coffee machine and coffee vending machine companies can be. We have just dealt with yet another case of a company being sold a coffee machine that at best can supply no more than 50 cups a day (that is for 30 staff),,, and guess what, they have 78 staff!

Seems their coffee machine supplier convinced them that a coffee vending machine would be unsuitable as it only offered powdered milk… so it would be better buying a fresh milk espresso machine. Well, let’s see…. how do 78 staff use one fresh milk frothing machine when it takes a few minutes each time to froth the milk, dispense the coffee and reset? What happens when the 1.8l water tank needs to be refilled every 6 -8 cups? Never mind the cleaning hassle when using fresh milk. Crazy!

Yet without any conscience… the sale was made…!

They called us when they got no joy from their supplier to “do something” to fix the problem. We swapped out the coffee machine with a coffee vending machine… why?

Simple. The issue of fresh milk versus powdered milk is a major red-herring! Today, powdered milk for coffee vending machines is formulated to give the rich, creamy taste of real milk… foamed just like the cappuccino down at the local coffee shop. Sure, you can use a creamer but that ISN’T milk… just palm oil and a whole lot of unexciting ingredients. What did staff say…were they disappointed to get a powdered milk? Nope. Most didn’t even notice!

Here’s a thought…you need a coffee machine and are trying to work out whether you should buy a capsule machine or one that grinds coffee beans…what should you do? Here are some pro’s and con’s of each:

Capsule

Pros: Capsule machine usually cheaper than coffee bean machine; quiet operation; ease of use.

Con: Price of capsules far exceeds coffee beans; can only use coffee supplied by capsule makers.

Bean coffee machine

Pro’s: Cost of coffee beans much cheaper than capsule coffee machine; freedom to use any beans.

Con’s: Not as quiet as capsule coffee machine and machine itself is usually more expensive than a capsule machine.

So here’s the financial calculation.

Assume your household of two adults drinks 4 cups of coffee a day.

Capsule machine: R 2500-00

Bean coffee machine: R 5000-00

Capsules: R4 each = 1 coffee drink

Coffee beans: R140-00/kg = R1 per coffee drink

So it costs R16 per day for capsule coffee in your household and R4 for coffee bean coffee and so a coffee bean machine saves R12/day. So to cover the cost difference between the two machines of R2500-00 , it will take 208 days or 7 months. Thereafter you’ll save R12/day or R360-00 per day

So financially, the bean coffee machine actually offers cost advantages.
